The Blue Jacquier

Capital letter A, of the word At. t the installation in a new studio, for the bicentennial of the French Revolution, in 1989, Yvo Jacquier provoked his own overturn : a new way to tame the line on a wet paper. The material necessary to allow this control, a mixture of watercolor and ink, is a gift but a secondary effect. The initial goal is to give to the watercolor a plain capacity to express its pigments. With a dry paper, the borders of a line are abrupt. That doesn't fit with all the subjects. The french painter solved a plastic problem, and he opened a new space of expression to contemporary painting.
The Blue Jacquier was at first the main color in a series of landscapes called « nocturnes ». Slowly, the willing of the drawing into the wet has pushed ahead the graphic side. Up to suppress the background. We could compare that with a series of concertos in which the harmonic support would have fade, up to let the soloist alone with the melody.

The transition between lanscape and calligraphy.

This new way to practice watercolor is unedited. The handbooks, guides and the textbook even warn that you have to wait the drying of the paper before to dare any graphic add. People might feel offended when they read, they hear for years the same "forbidding" before to discover this "proposal".

Yvo Jacquier has invented other technics, all on paper, as if he wanted to equilibrate the debate about « oil vs water ».

The Horses

Yvo Jacquier isn't a horse rider. It was too late to begin without a major risk ! The painter is a handworker, and he chose fencing to perfect his wrist. On the other hand, the horse is a fundamental symbol in the celtic culture. The artist went on the paddock and asked many explanations to the teachers. A lot of sketches were necessary for the completion of the study. « The horse should stay into the drawer, and not only in its box ». The french artist got a contemporary result with a classical attitude.

The Cats

The calligraphy is the art to write in a nice way. In this case : how to write « horse » or « cat » in blue ? As a model, the cat was the first. Not because of the hairs, in spite of the amazing effect of the material. The cat is flexible, expressive, and a little bit ham : a native model; even when it sleeps ! And as a pet, it enters the contemporary fashion.

Horses' series
Calligraphies, that look random but they are stroboscopic. Fast galop for this horse. Transition towards the pure abstraction of the galop, with a rider. Horse with a rider, very pure lines. The curves of the paw the ground enter on the stage, mixing with the jump attitude. The paw the ground reveals its silhouette. Paw the ground, proud attitude. Begining of a move, as a shadow. Hands up ! For a horse it is a joke. Re mix of images The jump of a celtic horse is coming out. The celtic strenght shows its perfect lines. Shuffle of the horse motives. Two legs come in the front. Another celtic horse. Last mix of the motives. Arabian horse, jumping above.


(please pass the mouse left). The «writing effet» is obvious when we chain the pictures. This series seems to tell the life of a horse.

The Calligraphy is an art of emptiness. The white is not a forgotten background, a dry desert. The water is still here, which magnetizes the color in its light. The strictly graphical part says the same. The "in" speaks as well as the "out", the yin and the yang are inseparable. And the life flows in the fragile frontier of the lines, as a manifestation of energy.
