From the sketch to the signature

Capital letter M, of the word More. ore than one hundred sketches are necessary for one single work. From the study of the motif up to the mise en scène of the composition, the building of a contemporary painting is very complex. Each step is the occasion of a renewed conception, in which the drawing will discuss with the ideas and the emotions.

The spontaneity is manifested at each stage, it gives its impulse from the beginning, since the start of a project. It is unrealistic to rely on the freshness of the realisation to make up for a project when it lacks arguments.
The spontaneity of the sketch, as an initial gesture, is a major preoccupation. The first lines of a project contain all the spirit of a work. The final result will not only remind this initial impulse, each step will enhances this « original reason of the work ».

The sketch of Woman, oil by Yvo Jacquier.

After several dozen of years of practice, a single breath is blowing from the sketch up to the signature. We could call it anticipation, but this is more a way to keep fidel to the inspirational energy which provokes the work. The zen principle might suit to that phenomenon. Further, in being closer to his first stride, maybe the artist seeks the light of an original chaos.

The color, the light and the material will take their role in this process. The brush of a painter never stops to draw, and the energy is the same.

Sketches of study

The study of the motif is a base, and at first the way to tame the reality. As a subject, the body needs this practice to surpass the mechanical aspects. One does not replace a human being with any plastic mannequin. All is in the details at the beginning, that become essential at the end. Moreover, the model can be a dancer, someone who knows to express ideas with her body. This can become a spring of inspiration. The myth of the window dressing is wrong. This approach is not particularly contemporary. The relationship between the model and the painter has always been a matter of persons, beyond the epochs.

Freehand drawing

Capital letter T, of the word The. he drawing called « freehand », is maybe the most contemporary part of the job. Every oils, watercolors, calligraphies and pure drawings start by that strategic step. In a seance of A3 (format of the usual paper), several dozen of sheets fall on the floor. The mainstream of the creation emerges among this flow. Whatever the techniques, even the subjects. The personality of the line leads the process. The sense of the work is not in the title (nor in the way to give a title). It is into the surface of the lines.

2015 - FreeHand Sketches
This file could be put on the composition page. It shows the transition between freehand drawing and the organization by geometry. In fact, after twelve years of lessons by Rublev, Botticelli and Dürer, Yvo Jacquier speaks the language of Renaissance painters in a fluent way. Each line of the sketches finds the path of harmony, as the ancient masters practiced it.
