The spirit of water

Capital letter O, of the word One. ne usual definition of the Watercolor is that of « a pigment that one dilutes into water ». To be honest, this shortcut is useful only in the conversation. The paper is missing, and without it you throw the pigment through the window. The first elements of this technique are the fibers which interact with the water, then with the paint brush and at last, during the drying, with the pigment. The speed is fast but the process is complex.

Like every technique of painting, the watercolor is at first a practice, that we can define by the result that we see. The definitions imagine more than they prove something. About the final aspect, the first fact is that the light comes from the paper. The colors spare the brightness of the background (they try even to flatter this light), and if there is too much pigment, you might regret but you won't make up for your stupid act.

For the french painter, there is another preoccupation in the chain of the reactions : the way to keep the pigment alive when the paper dries. This point is maybe the heart of this discipline, above any consideration about the quality of the elements. At the end, the colors have to look wet. This makes the difference between an ordinary sketch and a contemporary artwork.

Series Prague

These works are the first that the painter created in Prague. During his composition study, he practiced drawing like a sportsman cares about his physical condition. The « comeback to the color has been in the swimming pool ». The bathtub is into the process ! The material has to suffer a little bit to understand the artist. This kind of exploration of the material is typically contemporary.

Series Pont-Aven

Yvo Jacquier is used to large formats in Watercolors. eg 56 x 76 cm. « The full page of Arches paper is, as he says, the size of melancholy » (Melencolia by Dürer is very small). For years the artist practiced the subject of landscape. It became dark, to show an inspirational moon. Maybe wistful. The light came back with the painting of the contemporary woman.

Allegro is a very colored watercolor. Opera is showing the grace after the strenght of colors. A silhouette of a walking woman emerges. This woman goes ahead in the mood of a mirage. Woman from the sky is a way to escape to the mirage. Back to the earth, the woman is shy between her lines. Immortal is she real or is she a wish ? The answer is into the reality of beauty. The woman meets the musician, in the kiss of lines.

Woman and Women

THE Woman is one of the favorite subject of the artist. In the classics, this one is like the last station before cosmos. Yvo Jacquier paints women because over, further, there is nothing figurative any more. Even, the challenge is to surpass the figurative, at least the narrative of an uninteresting inventory. The mystery of woman is not a matter of accounting. For proof the sophisticate compositions. After sketches and drawing, watercolor has been a door to enter this strange world. At the studio, a question towards the model may come from the mouth, but the answer shall come to the eyes.

The watercolors which are shown in the series Prague and Pont-Aven use a more classical process than the nocturnes and the calligraphies. In these two other cases, the technique is unedited, all is done on a wet paper. However, the artist claims the expression before any technological performance. He can even choose the simplest argument of the drawing, some lead on paper, by honesty towards certain motives.
